If they think they are watching a nice dance, suddenly there is a nasty kick, if they expect a heavy fight, suddenly they see a friendly acrobatic game. What is it??? An experienced 'capoeirista' knows it is everything, and capoeira keeps surprising him (or her). Capoeira is an acrobatic and musical martial art, with African roots, but born in Brazil in the 16th century, in the 'senzalas', where African slaves were locked in after their work on the plantations and in the mines. Capoeira is played by two persons, accompanied by a music group and other people in a circle. It can be slow and low, or fast and high and everything in between it. The people in the circle take their turn in playing the game and playing music. Capoeiristas never stand still, they are always moving, using the ginga, the swinging basic step of capoeira, which allows them to evade the attacks of the adversary and surprise him with a movement from an unexpected corner. Everybody, men and women, children, grown ups and older people, strong and healthy people as well as people with some handicap, can learn capoeira, because everybody develops his or her own style.
