Berimbau de Ouro

Grupo de Capoeira Berimbau is lead by Mestre Marreta (Luiz Carlos Afonso) and has groups in the Netherlands, Germany, France and of course Brazil.

Mestre Carne de Cobra starts his school in 1976: Associação de Capoeira Regional Berimbau de Ouro dos Irmãos Unidos do Mestre Carne de Cobra.

When Mestre Marreta starts his own school in 1979 in Sete Lagoas he uses the same name: Academia de Capoeira Berimbau de Ouro.
Berimbau de Ouro sees capoeira as a whole and does not really make a strict distinction between Angola and regional.  It is more important to learn, experience and exchange capoeira in all its diverse ways, to adapt to the music and to the environment you are in. The social side of capoeira is very important for the group, not only during capoeira activities, but also in society. We develop and maintain several social projects, mostly in Brazil and sometimes in Europe, you can find them at our social project pages. Here you will find more info about the group and its history.

Capoeira: is it a game, a fight, a dance? The spectators always have their doubts about this. If they think they are watching a nice dance, suddenly there is a nasty kick, if they expect a heavy fight, suddenly they see a friendly acrobatic game. What is it???

An experienced 'capoeirista' knows it is everything, and capoeira keeps surprising him (or her). Capoeira is an acrobatic and musical martial art, with African roots, but born in Brazil in the 16th century, in the 'senzalas', where African slaves were locked in after their work on the plantations and in the mines.

Capoeira is played by two persons, accompanied by a music group and other people in a circle. It can be slow and low, or fast and high and everything in between it. The people in the circle take their turn in playing the game and playing music. Capoeiristas never stand still, they are always moving, using the ginga, the swinging basic step of capoeira, which allows them to evade the attacks of the adversary and surprise him with a movement from an unexpected corner.

Everybody, men and women, children, grown ups and older people, strong and healthy people as well as people with some handicap, can learn capoeira, because everybody develops his or her own style.
